OBS Sabah, A Recollection (Part 1, Days 1 to 6)
hey ppl, jus wanna share wad happened during obs sabah. so basically this is entry is all that happened during those 12 days.
Day 1 (Flight To Sabah)
dad fetched me to sch at 12pm then had briefing in LT1 till 2 when the bus came to bring us to Senai Airport. sat beside Aveil and listened to Story Of The Year. Mattheus had a terrorist balaclava and we were saying he wear it into the airport, carrying Bai Rong's gasoline can. haha! reached the airport at 3 and checked in then we had 2+ hours to slack cos departure time was 6:30. bought gum and cookies, had hotdogs and dunkin' donuts for tea and went into the departure hall at 5:45. plane took off at 6:30 and listened to more music wif Aveil during the flight. we should hav reached Sabah at 8:30 but landing was delayed due to bad weather so there was a lame in-flight game. the air stewardess asked for 3 volunteers. 1 from sji, 1 from another sch which was also on the plane (greenridge sec) and 1 from the public. Geovenn went for us, Bernard Teo went up for public and some guy went for the other sch. they had to demonstrate how to use the life vests, how to put on the seat belt, how to evacuate the plane and how to wear the oxygen mask. and the winner would be the one who gets the loudest applause. we decided to sabo Geovenn although he had the best performance and not clap for him instead we clapped for Teo. haha. finally the plane landed at 9:00 and we collected our stuff. left for the obs place at 9:30 and reached at 10. went straight for supper then they split us into our groups. my group (group 1) Dipan, Gabriel Rod, Gareth, Joshua Tan, Keenan, Mattheus, Michael Ee, Shawn Foo, Timothy Siew, Yan Xun, Yu Hao, Zachary and Me. collected our bags and linen for our bunks and went to our dorms. unpacked, and retired for the nite. yawnzzzz...
Day 2 (Intro)
woke up at 5:30, washed up and went for morning pt at 6. went to the beach for a 1km jog then played a few games till 6:30. B'fast at 7 and went for group photo at 8. took pictures of the whole cohort and our group. had group discussion at 9 on what our group name should be and came up wif a cheer. since we were talking about prickly heat powder, we decided on St. Luke's Pricks! roflmao! and our cheer was also on prickly heat. lunch at 12 then went for icebreaker games at 2 we had to cross over this rope about 1.5 m high without touching it using 3 poles and a few ropes so we built this 3 footed structure and somehow managed to get over the rope without touching the rope. btw its called electric fence. lol. at 4, we climbed a ridge to familiarise ourselves wif the jungle expedition which will be on day 5. taught us how to pitch a tent using 2 trees or poles and a rope and a basha or tentsheet. went back at 6 to bathe and then went for dinner at 6:30. slacked, then went to the assembly hall at 8 for briefing on our sea expedition tmr morning. learned about the island we were sailing to, our whaler (the ship) sailing stuff (port, starboard, sail positions, tacking, the works....finished by 930 then went to the storage area to collect what was needed for tmr. went for biscuits and milo and then went to dorms. made fun of Gareth's boobs and took stupid pictures then went to sleep. hahax. :)
Day 3 (Sea Expedition, Sail to Dinawan Island)
Everything same as day 2 until after b'fast. went to the boathouse wif the supplies and equipment. collected the sails, oars and life vests and loaded the stuff on the ship. cast off at 9:30 and rowed out to sea to catch the wind. from where we set off, the island looked quite near but by 12pm, we were only halfway there. had our packed lunch on board and continued on sailing we were supposed to be there by 2 but we couldnt make it, so the rescue boat towed us the remaining distance. unloaded our stuff and set up base camp. split the jobs between us. shawn, mattheus and yanxun went to collect firewood, keenan and max started the fire, gabriel and mike prepared dinner and the rest pitched our tents. by 5:30 it was alr getting dark and me and shawn foo decided to change out of our wet clothes. realized that our slippers were left in the whaler! so we swimmed back to the ship to get them. swam about 50m, really fun! but had trouble getting on the ship cos the water was alr really deep but still managed to get our slippers =P. swam back, changed and had dinner wif the rest of the group at 6. washed the pots utensils by the beach using sand and rinsed it using the water we brought in the big gallons. had another group meeting at 7:30 till 8 then went to the tent to sleep. but it was really stuffy so i went to the fireplace where michael, gabriel and keenan were. talked some cock then mike and gabe left. kept the fire alive and played wif hermit crabs till around 12 when it got cooler and i was getting sleepy. went back into the tent to sleep but had difficulty cos of the bloody sandflies. feet were itching the whole nite. but somehow i managed to fall asleep. =X
Day 4 (Sea Expedition, Sail back to OBS and Ropes Course)
woke up at 6:30 and went to make breakfast wif michael. breakfast was maggi mee and milo. so easy job for me lor. finished at 7:30 then started packing up our stuff and unpitching the tents. loaded the stuff onto the whaler at 9 and cast off at 9:30. same thing happened, couldnt reach back by 1 so they had to tug us again. dismantled the sails and put them back into the boat house, washed up all our equipment then went to shower then lunch. had ropes course at 3 and i thot they were gonna let us rest for the day...dam. but the ropes course was quite fun, did the giants ladder. each rung was around 1.5m between each other and the rungs were supported by chains so it was really wobbly. 3 people had to go up at one time and work together to get to the top. i went wif Gabriel and Matt. not as easy as i thot but we helped each other and managed to get to the top. :) went back to shower again then it was time for dinner. after that, there was a briefing about tmr's jungle expedition and home stay. supposed to climb this 1150m hill, camp there for the night then go down the other side and stay someone's place. we were also required to cook lunch and dinner for the family. after the briefing, went for supper then went to dorms to zzz...
Day 5 (Jungle Expedition)
Everything same as day 2 until after b'fast. went back to dorms to pack up and get ready for the bus at 9:30. bus brought us to the foot of the hill, over there our instructor taught us how to navigate using compass and map. then we were left on our own to figure out the trail that would bring us to the summit. started trekking at 10:30. at 1st the ground was not that steep but soon we had to use ropes to help us climb. i slipped 5m at one point and if not for Michael and Gabriel, i could hav slid like another 10 or 15m. thanks guys, phew! talked crap as we climbed to keep ourselves occupied. lets see, spongebob, phua chu kang's father, dota...finally reached the summit at 1pm, had our packed lunch then it started raining! argh! gave myself an excuse to slack by going to collect water. went wif yanxun, yuhao and gabriel. but regretted it, the walk to the water source was 10min there and another 10min back and after washing myself a little, i slipped on the way up cos my hands were full, carrying the jerry cans. so i got all muddy again. =S reached campsite and saw they had already pitched the tents and a kitchen tent cos it was raining. soon the weather was getting really cold cos we were quite high up and it was also raining! kept warm at our little fire while i could hear the others preparing for the cultural nite performance which will be during the home stay. couldnt help it, i was shivering...prepared dinner at 4:30, i was in charge of keeping the fire burning brightly. :) so i managed to get warm and at the same time, the fire helped to dry my clothes. had dinner at 6 then group sharing at 7. went back to the fire to keep warm and talk crap. Gabriel who was collecting the firewood was kinda crazy. he was smashing away at the bamboo to break it into smaller pieces, little did he kno that his fingers were bleeding and he didnt even feel it! went to the tent to sleep at 9 while some others stayed up a little longer. during the night, the fire got really big maybe due to the strong winds blowing. that caused the shoes of Joshua, Michael and Zack to be engulfed in the flames. Zack's shoe which was closest to the fire got burnt at the side leaving a huge hole. Joshua's got burnt at the front so u could see his toes sticking out. Mike's one was only seared a little but still, its an asics shoe! Zack's one also. but Josh's one was jus the plain white school shoes. poor guys, Zack even got burnt by the melting latex while trying to save his shoe. well, after that commotion, we all went back to sleep. yawnzzz...
Day 6 (Jungle Expedition, Home Stay)
woke up at 7 and prepared breakfast for the group wif shawn foo. maggi mee and milo again...sianz. finished at 8:30 then started unpitching and packing the equipment. set off at 10 down the hill. man, las nite's rain caused the ground to become even more slippery and this time we were going down. but it was quite fun cos we were guessing on who would slip next. Gareth was the winner in falling the most times. i didnt even fall once, i slipped b4 but i managed to regain my footing. heh. shawn foo was really funny, when he slipped, he grabbed Mattheus and Matt fell. poor thing! haha. continued to talk more crap on the way down. dota again being the main subject. reached the bottom at 1 then walked to Buhad's house, the name of the family which we were going to stay with. reached there at 1:30 and watched some tv,not bad sia, got astro (astro is cable tv jus like starhub) then went to shower. the toilet wasnt say the best la, same as those in coffee shops, jus 4 concrete walls and a shower head, no tiles whatsoever. after the shower, i was shivering. that was the time when i started to feel sick. i was light-headed and sleepy. couldnt even help out in preparing lunch. almost fell asleep during lunch also. after lunch, the group went for a tour around the kampong at 3. Rohan took my temp and it was 38.2 C so i stayed behind and rested till 5 when they came back. by then it was already time to prepare dinner. again, i was still too tired to do anything to i jus watched them. after dinner, my instructor told me that they were going to bring me and keenan back after the cultural night cos he too had fever. the mini van brought the group to Joimin's place, the name of the family the other group was staying with. Joimin's place didnt hav astro so that was quite unlucky for the other group. but they had a natural spring for a shower room, so that was really cool. during the cultural nite, the locals taught us some dance thingy which was used in the olden times to court girls. haha. showed us their cultural dresses and they also played some cool instruments. after that it was time for our part. we sang "we are singapore" and some of our school songs. lol culture wad...after that, it was time to leave. so me, keenan, joshua (cos he sprained his ankle when coming down the hill) and zhi guang (fell flat on his front and got abrasion at his ribs area) got into the mini van and Ira and Max drove us back to OBS to rest. went to the canteen to make milo for me and zhi guang and got scalded by the hot water. grrr! played daidee for a while then retired for the night.
